Hidden Hawaii: Along the Hana coast

For this month’s Hidden Hawaii slideshow, we take you to the picturesque Hana coast on the island of Maui. Once again, photographer David Croxford and HAWAII Magazine editor John Heckathorn took roads less traveled in search of hidden treasures in familiar places. They took a single road this time—the notoriously narrow and winding Hana Highway […]

Char’s Chopsticks: Peggy Sue’s in Maui

One of my favorite Maui restaurants in Kihei is Peggy Sue’s, a ’50s-style diner. Unlike most people my age, I love the 1950s even though I was born several decades later. I’ve always enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley and wished I owned a poodle skirt. Sometimes I wonder if I was born in the wrong

New Maui Vodka

If you thought Maui had room for only one vodka, think again. Two years ago, the first Maui vodka appeared. Ocean Vodka distills grain in Idaho and bottles it on Maui with desalinated deep ocean water from the Big Island. Another Maui firm, Pau Trading Company, recently began shipping another premium vodka, Pau Maui Vodka,

“Sex and the City” actor Chris Noth bids Maui “aloha”

Sorry, we just couldn’t resist the plethora of cuteness here. Actor Chris Noth—a.k.a. “Mr. Big” of  the Emmy-winning HBO series Sex and the City—was snapped at Maui airport yesterday, awaiting a flight to points unknown after a weeklong vacation. The real star of the photos, though, isn’t the leisurely-attired Noth, 53, or his girlfriend Tara

12 great hours on Maui

I recently took a trip on the Hawaii Superferry to write about the channel-crossing ride from Oahu to Maui and back. You can read about my journey in the current September/October 2008 issue of HAWAII, or check out some photos here on HawaiiMagazine.com. It was a great way to spend a relaxing Monday. Better still,

Maui sea turtles get a birthday party, weeklong fest

Sea turtles have birthdays, too. It’s just that no one celebrates them. The folks at the Maui Ocean Center aim to change that on Aug. 26 when they throw a birthday bash for their six Hawaiian green sea turtles—Nohea, Leilani, Maluhia, Kuuipo, Kainalu and Alamea. Between 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, aquarium visitors

Zippy’s to open its first Maui restaurant

Honolulu-based Zippy’s Restaurants is opening its first-ever Maui location on August 18 in Kahului. It’s a historic moment for Zippy’s and Maui fans of its cuisine. Zippy’s famous chili, its ZipPacs and the rest of its plate lunch menu will now be available 24 hours a day on the Valley Isle! No more envying Oahu.

Haleakala cabins on Maui now easier to reserve

All of us who love trekking Maui’s most amazing crater are suddenly happy campers. Haleakala National Park has done away with the lottery system for cabin rentals within the mountain’s crater. Why is this such good news? Hiking and camping Mount Haleakala’s mountaintop “crater”—actually a massive “erosional depression”—is one of the top three or four

The Hawaii Superferry. I ride it.

I took a trip on the Hawaii Superferry recently to do some work on Maui. I could, of course, have hopped an increasingly-expensive 20-minute interisland flight. But I had been curious about the much-talked-about Superferry. Though I was born and raised in Hawaii, the thought of cruising from island to island seemed weird and unnatural.
